As education takes an increasingly digital turn, more and more iPads and tablets are making their way into the classroom.

Along the way they are arming children with technological skills and interactive learning experiences that range from apps and games to immersive artificial intelligence and real-life simulations.

But devices don’t come cheap, and for the schools embracing them there’s a significant investment in hardware that’s worth protecting against theft, loss and damage.

iPads and tablets in school find themselves at risk of three major threats: loss, damage and even theft.

They are also used in education in different ways – from mobile tablets that children use to create video assignments in the school yard to static kiosks in the library or at school check-in.

That use case needs to be considered when devising the right protection strategy for each device.

Questions to ask include:

How will this device be used?
Will it be mobile, static or perhaps even a blend of both where the device can be taken from its stand and used elsewhere?

Where will it be positioned?
A device used to check resources at the school library for example might be positioned on a wall, countertop or even be freestanding. But an iPad or tablet used regularly in the classroom might be affixed to a tabletop or bench that students can access.

Is it in a high-traffic area?
If the device is unsupervised and used for student check-in, for example, it might require extra security from theft.

How will it be charged?
Static devices used at school check-in, in the library or as a bank of devices that students can access will need access to power for charging, and these charging cords should be concealed or channeled in the interests of safety.
