How To Setup Kiosk Mode On An Android Tablet

The kiosk mode function has been employed in commercial, retail and hospitality settings serving the role as information kiosks, digital displays and mobile Points of Sale.
If you’re looking to use an Android tablet as a kiosk and lock down the device to a single app, there are a wide range of apps available to download.

Setting Up GoKiosk

Step 1
Download GoKiosk
1. Search for GoKiosk in your App Store and simply download to your device
2. Once installed, open the app
Step 2
Allow Permissions
1. For GoKiosk to work effectively, you will need to allow permissions on all requested settings. Follow each prompt to Allow access.
2. Under ‘Allow Usage Access’ Press ‘Enable’ and adjust your settings to ‘Allow Usage Tracking’.
3. Then select ‘Enable’ under ‘Permit Drawing Over Other Apps’ and adjust your setting to Allow Permission.
4. GoKiosk also gives you the option to link to Samsung KNOX for a more secure mobile device management system.
5. Lastly, select ‘Enable’ under ‘Install From Unknown Source’ and adjust your settings to Allow permission and then back in the GoKiosk Permissions menu scroll down and select ‘Complete Setup’.
Step 3
Setup GoKiosk as the default home screen
1. Once you have pressed ‘Complete Setup’ you will be prompted to set GoKiosk to the default home screen. Select ‘Ok, Got It!’ on the instructions page and then select GoKiosk and set as ‘Always’.
Step 4
Access Settings
1. You have now completed the setup process and are on the Kiosk home screen. To change your GoKiosk settings, tap on the screen 5 times to access the login screen. Enter your default password and select ‘Go To Admin Settings’.
2. To select your desired application for Kiosk Mode, select ‘Allowed Applications’ and press on the + button on the bottom right hand corner. Simply select your desired app (we will be using Square POS) then press ‘Add’.
3. GoKiosk also includes additional options on the right to either launch at startup or hide on home screen if you wish.
4. Once you have added your desired app, go back to the Kiosk home screen and select the app to launch.
Step 5
Exit GoKiosk
1. To exit out of GoKiosk, press your home or back button to navigate back to the kiosk home screen. Login to settings by tapping on the screen 5 times and enter your default password and select ‘Go To Admin Settings’.
2. Scroll down the menu and then select ‘Exit GoKiosk’ then press ‘Exit’ again to confirm.

Setting Up SureLock

Step 1
Download SureLock
1. Search for SureLock in your App Store and simply download to your device
2. Once installed, open the app
Step 2
Set up SureLock Permissions and Settings
3. Firstly, allow permissions for photos, media and files. Next SureLock will ask the purpose of use for your business. We are going to select the option to prevent device misuse. Once selected, press ‘Continue’.
4. Next is the user license agreement. Once you have understood the terms of use, press ‘Accept’.
Step 3
Allow permissions
5. SureLock now requires you to allow a range of permissions for the app to run effectively. Firstly, select ‘Set SureLock As Default Launcher’ and press ‘OK, Got it!’. When the pop up appears, select the SureLock app and press ‘Always’.
6. Next press ‘Configure Runtime Permissions’ and check each box in the list and then select ‘Continue’.
7. With each pop up, press ‘Allow’ to apply the correct permissions for SureLock. Then press ‘Continue’.
8. Select ‘Activate Device Admin’ and press ‘Proceed’ in the bottom right, then press ‘Activate’.
9. SureLock includes the option to activate Samsung KNOX for Samsung devices for a more secure mobile device management system. To activate, press ‘Enable Samsung KNOX’.
10. Select ‘Configure System Permission’ and then activate to turn on.
11. Navigate back to the permissions page and press ‘Enable Notification Access’ and then activate the SureLock app to turn on and press ‘Allow’.
12. Navigate back to the permissions page and press ‘Enable Display Over Other Apps’. Activate to allow permission and then navigate back to the permissions page.
13. Finally, select ‘Disable Automatic Update From Play Store’. Press ‘I Understand!’ on the pop up and then select ‘Continue’. Adjust your settings on your device to turn off automatic updates and then navigate back to the permissions page and press ‘Continue’.
Step 4
Access Settings
14. You have now completed the setup process and are on the Kiosk home screen. To add an app to use in Kiosk mode, tap on the screen 5 times. Enter your default password and press ‘Go To Admin Settings’. Within admin settings you can allow websites, manage multiple users and adjust system settings. To lock down the device to a single app, press ‘Allowed Applications’.
15. Select ‘Add App’ in the bottom left corner. Once the page has loaded, select your desired app (we will be using Square POS) and press ‘Done’. Navigate back to the kiosk home screen by selecting ‘Done’ on each settings page.
16. Simply select your chosen app to launch it in Kiosk Mode.
Step 5
Exit SureLock
17. To exit out of SureLock, tap on the screen 5 times, enter your password and select ‘Exit SureLock’.
