What’s the go with GaN chargers?

February 28, 2022

When you think about tablets and mobile devices' technological innovation, the last thing that springs to mind is the charger you use to keep your device powered.

However, like all areas of the tech world, chargers have come a long way in the past decade, and one of the latest innovations to hit the market is the GaN charger.

So, what exactly is a GaN charger and how does it improve on other charging methods?

What is a GaN charger?

what is a gan charger?

Described as the ‘future of charging,’ GaN chargers harness the power of gallium nitride (GaN) rather than traditional silicon, which offers a wealth of benefits.

Gallium nitride has been around for a while and since the 1990s, has been used in LEDs, satellites, and solar arrays.

In Blu-ray DVD players, gallium nitride also produces the blue light that reads the data from the DVD.

The technology has only recently been applied to batteries, replacing silicon as the material of choice.

While silicon has always been highly affordable, it has its limitations, and that’s where gallium nitride offers some serious benefits.

The benefits of GaN chargers

The most significant benefit of gallium nitride is that it produces less heat, which has a range of flow-on effects.

Less heat means the charger components can be positioned closer together, which means the charger is smaller.

At the same time, it can still pack a whole lot of charging punch. One of the major properties of gallium nitride is that it’s a crystal-like material.

This means high voltages can be quickly and safely conducted, with the electrical current passing swiftly through the charger components.

The fact that less energy is lost to heat production also helps with ensuring more power is being transferred to charging a device.

The upshot? A faster charge for your devices, greater efficiency, and, as we mentioned before, less heat.

In the process, GaN chargers also embrace all the latest features you expect of a charger. They can monitor how full the battery is and reduce the current as the battery fills up to ensure it does not overcharge and incur damage.

So, let’s recap those benefits:

  • Less heat
  • More compact
  • Faster charging
  • Battery monitoring to prevent overcharging

GaN chargers are relatively new but have been around for a couple of years.

In 2020, they hit the mainstream when they appeared pretty much everywhere at the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, known as CES 2020.

At that stage, GaN was described as ‘one of the most exciting advances in charger technology in recent years.

Since then, more and more manufacturers have been shifting to this technology, with the price of GaN chargers reducing.

Bosstab has recently introduced GaN chargers to its line-up of tablet stand accessories.

Our 40W double USB-C charger allows for a maximum power of up to 30W when charging a single device and up to 20W when two devices are being charged simultaneously.

Charging is up to 2.5 times faster than a silicon charger, and smart power-sharing allocates power to the device that needs it the most.

Recommended for tablets and smartphones, the charger also packs enough power to charge a wide range of USB-C compatible devices, including Samsung, Google, Surface Pro, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iPad Pro, and iPhone.

You can learn more about and purchase the Bosstab GaN charger here.

5 Handy iPad Stands

December 31, 2018
If you've ever walked into the Apple store, anywhere in the world, you'll notice one very remarkable thing: It's always packed. Part of the appeal, of course, are the products: Apple products are coveted. But part of the attraction is the customer or user's experience. Apple stores are strategically set up in a way that not only invites the customer in but encourages them to use the products that are set up on the tables — including tablets, smartphones, laptops and more. In brick-and-mortar stores, in fact, there is an awareness by retail brands that part of the customer experience is bringing the digital, "do it yourself" ethic into the shopping process. This means that customers should be able to access digital technology such as iPads, tablets and even smartphones when gaining discounts using QR codes, ordering new items or learning about the specs of a product before purchasing. In other words, the set up of digital interfaces in physical stores matters to the customer experience. And to facilitate this integration, here are 10 of the best iPad and tablet holders that enhance the customer's in-store experience in the age of e-commerce.
