When you think about tablets and mobile devices' technological innovation, the last thing that springs to mind is the charger you use to keep your device powered.

Described as the ‘future of charging,’ GaN chargers harness the power of gallium nitride (GaN) rather than traditional silicon, which offers a wealth of benefits.

Gallium nitride has been around for a while and since the 1990s, has been used in LEDs, satellites, and solar arrays.

In Blu-ray DVD players, gallium nitride also produces the blue light that reads the data from the DVD.

The technology has only recently been applied to batteries, replacing silicon as the material of choice.

While silicon has always been highly affordable, it has its limitations, and that’s where gallium nitride offers some serious benefits.

The benefits of GaN chargers

The most significant benefit of gallium nitride is that it produces less heat, which has a range of flow-on effects.

Less heat means the charger components can be positioned closer together, which means the charger is smaller.

At the same time, it can still pack a whole lot of charging punch. One of the major properties of gallium nitride is that it’s a crystal-like material.

This means high voltages can be quickly and safely conducted, with the electrical current passing swiftly through the charger components.

The fact that less energy is lost to heat production also helps with ensuring more power is being transferred to charging a device.

The upshot? A faster charge for your devices, greater efficiency, and, as we mentioned before, less heat.

In the process, GaN chargers also embrace all the latest features you expect of a charger. They can monitor how full the battery is and reduce the current as the battery fills up to ensure it does not overcharge and incur damage.

GaN chargers are relatively new but have been around for a couple of years.

In 2020, they hit the mainstream when they appeared pretty much everywhere at the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, known as CES 2020.

At that stage, GaN was described as ‘one of the most exciting advances in charger technology in recent years.

Since then, more and more manufacturers have been shifting to this technology, with the price of GaN chargers reducing.
