Apple has officially unveiled its iPad Pro for 2021, and as expected it does indeed feature 5G.

The Pro pedigree

The iPad Pro is Apple’s premium tablet model. The first generation of the range was launched in late 2015 and there’s been an upgrade pretty much every year since.

The latest release sees it enter its fifth generation and, with the unveiling, comes all the premium features consumers have come to expect in the Pro.

After all, this is an iPad targeted squarely at professional users who may require additional grunt under the hood.

It traditionally includes top of the line features like the best available cameras, faster processing speeds, additional storage, and the ability to connect to premium accessories such as smart keyboards.

So, what’s on offer in 2021?

There are a few features to this year’s iPad Pro that see it again upping the ante in the premium tablet market.

Superfast chip

Apple has added a Thunderbolt port to this latest Pro, and it comes complete with USB4 support as well as USB-C compatibility.

Apple says the new Thunderbolt port is the fastest, most versatile port on an iPad, opening up a massive ecosystem of accessories.

The Pro 2021 features Apple’s new M1 chip which is touted as delivering next-level performance.

Also used in the Mac, the M1 chip is built around what Apple describes as the world’s fastest Core Processing Unit, and is 75 times faster than the one found in the first generation iPad.

The chip also houses the graphics processor, and here’s where Apple has really focussed some energy. The M1 will provide graphics that are 1500 times faster than that first generation iPad referred to earlier.

This makes the iPad Pro 2021 the fastest device of its kind, Apple claims.

Storage access

Access to storage is also set to be quicker in this latest model, and courtesy of a 2TB storage option, there will be a lot more room for all those files that need to be accessed quickly.

The screen

The 12.9-inch Pro comes with some extras above and beyond the 11-inch option, including a liquid retina XDR display, which delivers 1000 nits of full-screen brightness.

On the 11-inch model, there’s a standard liquid retina display of 500 nits at peak brightness.

Cameras

The front facing camera upgrade is the biggest change to the Pro’s camera array, with Apple offering a new ultra-wide camera with a 12MP sensor and a 122‑degree field of view.

This camera also couples with machine learning to offer features like panning, which improve video conferencing calls.

On the rear, there is a 12MP wide camera, and 10MP ultra-wide option.

Release date and price

The iPad Pro 2021 is available for pre-order as of April 30 and is set to start shipping in the second half of May.
