When it comes to the world of mobile tablets, one tech company consistently reigns supreme – Apple with its perennially popular iPad.
Since it was first launched in 2010, the iPad has consistently dominated the tablet sphere, and right now commands an astounding 70.67 per cent market share.
This year Apple also boasts one of its largest iPad lineups to date, with four different models available. So, if you’re considering cashing in on the trend, which iPad would best suit your business?

There was a lot of talk Apple would abandon production of the iPad Mini after the last model was released four years ago in 2015. But that was not to be the case. Recently, the company launched an updated version in the form of the iPad Mini 5.
The new Mini features a 7.9-inch display and comes with support for the original Apple Pencil and Touch ID. It utilises the A12 Bionic chipset that arrived in the latest XS iPhones, and has a Lightning charger.
The Apple Mini kicks off with a price tag of US$399 for the 64GB model.
Akin to the garden variety option, the 9.7-inch iPad model of 2018 came with a big reduction in its price tag as the tech co looked to lure the education sector.
Currently retailing for US$329, it comes with the A10 processor, and is compatible with the first-generation Apple Pencil, but not a specific Apple keyboard, nor USB-C connection.
If you’re after a highly affordable, simple mobile Point of Sale, information kiosk or even a tablet that can also be used as a two-in-one by adding a generic brand keyboard, the 9.7-inch iPad 2018 is definitely an option worth considering. Its only drawback is the now-superseded processor, but if affordability as a factor that’s worth overlooking.
The iPad Air now comes with a 10.5-inch Retina display. It packs the A12 Bionic processors, comes in either 64GB or 256GB configurations and offers first generation Apple Pencil support.
The iPad Air retains the 3.5mm headphone jack, the Lightning charger and the Home button. It also uses TouchID, rather than FaceID, but is compatible with Apple’s smart keyboard.
The Air kicks in with a price of $499 for the 64GB model.
The iPad Air 2019 really ticks all the boxes when it comes to a tablet with the latest specifications, a decent screen size and a wallet-friendly price tag. It’s light, fast, compatible with the Apple keyboard and will accommodate most business uses other than intensive graphic design.
Available with either 11-inch or 12.9-inch displays, the iPad Pro is the golden child of the iPad stable, packing serious power, and all the cutting-edge Apple features.
The new generation iPad Pro offers an edge-to-edge screen, magnets for docking the Apple Pencil and a USB-C connection so those “creative types” can plug and play a full array of devices.
It’s also lost a few features along the way. Gone is the Home button, which is now replaced by gestures, and there is no headphone jack, with wireless headphones now the go.
Some serious size has also been shaved off in the creation of this product, with the profile of the iPad Pro a much slimmer 5.9mm.
It comes with an A12X Bionic processor, which Apple claims that makes the Pro faster than any Corei7 portable computer.
The iPad Pro has a starting price of USD $799 for the 11-inch and USD $999 for the 12.9.
The iPad Pro is squarely targeted at business which need power and performance to run hefty programs like Adobe PhotoShop, InDesign etc.
If you’re looking to use it as a mobile POS, it will more than do the job, but you’re probably not using the device to its full potential. You’ll pay a fair bit for the privilege too. On the flipside, if you’re seeking a big screen, the iPad Pro 12.9 offers the largest iPad screen currently available.
