Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released his predictions for Apple innovations over the year ahead, noting the company will likely release 11 product upgrades, including three iPads.
Kuo’s forecast confirms mounting rumors an iPad Mini 5 is in the works, while he also tips the 9.7-inch will feature a 10.2-inch screen that is achieved by reducing the bezels. These two models could be released as soon as next month, while upgraded iPad Pro models will likely be released much later in the year.
When it comes to anticipating what’s ahead for Apple, Kuo is considered the world’s pre-eminent analyst. Now based at TF Securities, Kuo previously accurately predicted the delay of the white iPhone 4, the inclusion of Touch ID on the iPhone 5s, some of the specifications of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and the arrival of the Apple Watch.
This year he tips Apple will release 11 products and upgrades including a power charging mat known as AirPower, new additions to the Apple Mac family, new AirPods, and three iPads.
Rumors have been intensifying that Apple is soon to release a reinvigorated iPad Mini. Kuo believes this to be true. He tips the Mini will receive an upgraded processor, feature TouchID, rather than the FaceID found on the higher-spec Pros, and retain the use of the lightning charger, rather than USB-C.
Kuo believes the 9.7-inch iPad will follow in the path of the 2018 iPad Pro, embracing a reduced bezel area to see the screen size increase to 10.2-inches. That might mean they do away with the Home button. But that’s where he feels adopting Pro technology will end for the seventh-generation release.
Kuo anticipates the standard iPad will also retain TouchID and the Lightning charger.
When it comes to the Pro, it will likely come with upgraded processors, but as Apple Insider notes that’s pretty much par for the course in terms of annual upgrades.
Last year’s Pro was released in October and came with the most powerful chip Apple had ever produced. MacWorld tips the new processors will be the A13X.
The iPad Mini 5 and seventh generation standard iPad are expected to be unveiled as soon as next month. Apple Insider further notes regulatory filings have already been made, meaning “it’s only a matter of time”.
Last year Apple dropped the price on its standard iPads at an education focussed event in March. This year March 25 is the date many expect Apple will flag for their iPad unveilings.
Meanwhile, the upgrade of the Pros is not anticipated until much later in the year. The iPad Pro 2018 was only unveiled on October 25, so the last quarter of 2019 seems likely for an update.
According to an Infographic released by TF Securities, these are the other Apple innovations Kuo expects will occur:
Three models including a 6.5-inch and 5.8-inch with OLED screens, and a 6.1-inch with an LED screen. The Lightning charger remains, and the notch area will be the same. Upgrades include frosted glass casing, bi-lateral wireless charging, FaceID, improved battery and triple camera.
All new design 16-inch to 16.5-inch MacBook Pro, Mac Pro and 31.6-inch 6k3k monitor. New 13-inch MacBook Pro with the option of 32GB.
